2015 Finals Day
Fortunately the sun shone on the 11 finals that were in Sunday’s schedule of matches. 25 participants on the day plus several spectators enjoyed some exciting matches.
In the Ladies Singles, Sue Elsbury achieved her first win of the day, beating Cathy Barnes 6-0, 6-4. The Men’s Singles proved to be one of the best matches of the day. It was a highly contested affair particularly in the first set, with some brilliant retrieving on both sides leading to some extremely long rallies. David May came back from 5-6 down to win the tie break and take the first set 7-6. Kosuke Imamura fought hard to stay in the game, but David gained in confidence after winning the first set and completed the match with a 6-0 second set.
The singles were followed by the main Ladies and Men’s doubles events, where Sue gained her second win of the day with Vanessa Wait, beating Cathy Barnes and Helen Judd. Cathy and Helen knew that they would have to play a very attacking, but risky game to overcome Sue and Vanessa, a very experienced, steady pair. Despite a great effort, Sue and Vanessa won 6-2,6-3.
The Men’s doubles was an engaging 3 setter, with Duncan Coles and Mike Childs winning the first set 7-5. Paul Hancock and Kuki Juric then turned the match around by becoming more attacking and secured the second set 6-4, followed by the final set 6-1. Two more doubles events, where partners were drawn then followed. Due to the format, several of the matches in these competitions were extremely close as reflected in the men’s final, where David May and Tony Allen beat Mike Childs and Tvrtko Ursulin 4-6,6-2,6-3.
In the Ladies event Sue Elsbury gained her third victory of the day along with Joanne Playfair, beating Helen Judd and Nancy Chipper 6-1, 6-3.
Several consolation finals also took place:
Amy Shepheard beat Karen Fowler 6-0 6-2
Tvrtko Ursulin beat Matthew Folliot 7-5 6-2
Midge Cox and Karen Fowler beat Polly Thatcher and Elaine Mowbray 6-1 6-1
Chris Hartnell and David McCarthy beat Paul Hancock and Keith Sheppard 6-7 7-5 10-8
Anne Moses and Paul Hancock beat Karen Fowler and David McCarthy 6-1 6-3
A very successful day of tennis for both players and spectators along with a fabulous selection of food to sustain everyone
