2010 Finals Day at Woodley (old courts)
Final’s Day at Wokingham Tennis Club proved to be a very entertaining affair. Spectators witnessed some great matches, all of which were extremely close, even if the score did not reflect this. Several players were involved in more than one final and some were in 3 !!
In the Ladies Singles, Amy Shepheard beat Sue Elsbury, title holder for the last 2 year, in a great match, where Amy used angles extremely well within the rallies. It was a hard hitting game, where Sue put up a good fight despite her shoulder injury which prevented her from serving overarm. The score was 6-1,6-2
In the consolation singles final, Vanessa Wait beat Anna Childs 6-0,6-4.
The Men’s Singles final was an epic battle between David May and Kuki Juric, a gruelling 2 hours match with some extremely long rallies and several deuce games. Kuki used the drop shot extremely well, but David got to grips with it and eventually won the match 7-5, 6-4.
The men’s doubles again featured David and Kuki on opposite sides along with Simon Taylor and Paul Hancock. This was another exciting game with Kuki and Paul initially taking a 3-0 lead in the first set. David and Simon managed to claw back the games to eventually win the first set on a tie break. In the second set, once again there were exciting long rallies which included some great net play and a variety of excellent attacking and defensive shots from both pairs. A great game to watch. David and Simon eventually won 7-6.6-2.
Paul featured again in the drawn men’s doubles with Roger Playfair, this time winning convincingly against Robin Davies and Dan Nadel 6-0,6-1.
The ladies doubles also featured the two singles players Amy and Sue, but this time Sue with partner Vanessa managed to gain her revenge on Amy and her partner Cathy Barnes 6-3,6-2. All four players regularly play in the ladies first team in Division 1, so consequently the standard of tennis was again very high.
Sue and Cathy met again in the drawn ladies doubles final, which proved to be a close 3 setter. Sue and Kath Edwards eventually coming out on top against Cathy and Elaine Mowbray 4-6,6-4,6-4.
In the consolation ladies doubles, Midge Cox and Alison Williams defeated Daphne Dunckley and Joanna Playfair 6-2,6-1.
In the Consolation men’s singles, Clive Phillips beat Matt Folliot 6-4 6-1.
The day finished with a great display of enjoyable tennis in the mixed doubles final, where Kuki along with Amy took his revenge on David and partner Nicky Gray 6-2,7-6.
