2009 Finals Day (at Wokingham (old courts)
Sue Elsbury’s hopes of a clean sweep of titles at Woodley and Wokingham Tennis Clubs’ Finals Day on Sunday were ended by Helen Judd and Luke Henderson in the mixed doubles.
After winning the ladies singles and doubles earlier in the day, Elsbury was denied her third final victory of the day in the mixed event.
Spectators enjoyed an excellent day of tennis at Wokingham on Sunday, the culmination of the joint clubs’ tournament in which 36 club members originally took part.
Play started with the ladies singles between Midge Cox and Elsbury.
After a nervous start by Elsbury, she found herself 5-2 down in games, but she managed to get her game together and pull out some great shots to take the first set 7-5.
In the second set, Elsbury maintained her hitting standard and wrong footed Midge on several occasions with some telling deep groundstrokes to the backhand corner.
Despite several deuce games, the second set was a convincing 6-1, giving Elsbury a convincing two-set victory.
The mens’ singles was keenly contested between Duncan Coles and Darren Dunmow.
Both players served well and hit a good variety of shots and once again many of the games went to deuce. It was Coles, though, who had the edge and came out on top 6-2, 6-1.
The ladies’ doubles was an even contest, with Elsbury back on court with Helen Judd, while Justine Woodward partnered Helen Wilson.
There were many long rallies with Woodward skilfully lobbing her opponents and following it with a drop shot, but Judd and Elsbury covered the court well and ended as the victors with a scoreline of 6-3,6-4.
In the mixed doubles Elsbury was back on court for her third final and Judd her second. Elsbury partnered Richard Pearson and Judd, Luke Henderson.
Once again, this was a good game to watch with Judd & Henderson taking the first set 6-3. The second set was even closer and needed to be decided by a tie break at 6-6, but Judd & Henderson kept their nerve and won the tie break to secure the match 6-3, 7-6.
John Edwards, president of Wokingham Tennis Club came to present the trophies.
The mens’ doubles between Martin Ball & Dan Cox and Luke Henderson &John Beardmore could not take place on Sunday and was set to be played last night.
Congratulations to all the finalists who provided the spectators with some great matches and thanks go to all the ladies who provided some wonderful food for the event.
